چکیده

While much that is written about the unity of consciousness does, as Dainton says, traffic in vague metaphors and exaggerated claims, Dainton’s book is a superb example of sober thinking and meticulous attention to detail. Stream of Consciousness can be roughly divided into three projects, projects that are bound together by co-consciousness. In the present context ‘co-consciousness’ refers to the relation that experiences have when they are experienced together. For instance, when one experiences a pain in one’s foot while listening to music, these two experiences will typically be co-conscious parts of a single multi-modal experience, feeling-a-pain-in-one’s-foot-while-listening-to-music. Dainton’s first project (chapters 2–3) is a defence of the view that co-consciousness is a primitive, unanalysable relation. Dainton examines a number of the leading analyses of co-consciousness and finds them all wanting. Next, (chapters 5–7) Dainton defends the claim that co-consciousness accounts for the continuity of consciousness — its unity through time. A large part of this project involves developing and defending a model of the specious present. (Buried between these two projects, in chapter 4, is a tentative defence of the claim that synchronic co-consciousness is necessarily transitive: if e1 and e2 are

Self-consciousness and the Unity of Consciousness

I Consciousness has a number of puzzling features. One such feature is its unity: the experiences and other conscious states that one has at a particular time seem to occur together in a certain way. Hypnosis and the Unity of Consciousness

Hypnosis appears to generate unusual—and sometimes even astonishing—changes in the contents of consciousness. Hypnotic subjects report perceiving things that are not there, they report not perceiving things that are there, and they report unusual alterations in the phenomenology of agency. In addition to apparent alterations in the contents of consciousness, hypnosis also appears to involve alt...

Are There Levels of Consciousness?

The notion of a level of consciousness is a key construct in the science of consciousness. Not only is the term employed to describe the global states of consciousness that are associated with post-comatose disorders, epileptic absence seizures, anaesthesia, and sleep, it plays an increasingly influential role in theoretical and methodological contexts. However, it is far from clear what precis...

The Contents of Phenomenal Consciousness One Relation to Rule Them All and in the Unity Bind Them

Stream of Consciousness is a detailed and insightful analysis of the nature of phenomenal consciousness, especially its unity at a time and continuity over stretches of time. I find Dainton's approach to phenomenal consciousness in many ways sound but I also point out one major source of disgreement between us. Dainton believes that to explain phenomenal unity and continuity, no reference to an...
